Escola Secundária Emídio Navarro
Historical Background
Emídio Navarro School is one of the oldest schools in Almada. Therefore, its development has accompanied the population growth of the county during the last decades (there were about 61,572 inhabitants in the 50's, 70,978 in the 60's and 108,150 in the 70's).
The first Industrial and Commercial School in the county was founded in 1955, having been divided in 1958 into two schools. One of these two was Escola Secundária Emídio Navarro.
Due to its enormous success at the time, it had to be divided again. The equivalent to the Middle Stage School was set apart.
The school started functioning in its actual facilities in 1960.
In 1971, Emídio Navarro School, was once again divided and the commercial vocational areas were transferred to another school.
From then till the late seventies, the two curricula areas offered by the school were: Electricity/Electronics and Mechanical Technology.
After the Reform of the Educational System, started in 1975/1976 with the unification of the general courses, other curricula vocational areas were created, namely:Chemistry, Sports, Civil Engineering; Arts; Design and Architecture.
In the beginning of the 90's there were another reform of the system and Emídio Navarro School started offering the general courses of the "Upper Stage Comprehensive School" and the general courses of the "Upper Secondary School" in the areas of Science, Art and Human Sciences.
Last year, the school has created alternative curricula courses, specially designed for those who want to be immediately integrated in the professional life in the areas of Design, Car Mechanics and Public Relations.
